Self-Reflection, Why it is Important

Moving to a new town where you don’t know anyone can make life pretty boring, so I have found several ways to keep myself busy. Recently, two of my favorite pastimes have been spending time outside and going to the gym.

Typically, I would spend about half an hour on the treadmill at the gym doing my “hot girl walks”. However, I have learned that there are many benefits to spending time outside.

Not only does walking outside encourage you to appreciate the beauty of everything, but it is incredibly inspiring. In this generation everyone, including myself, spends way too much time behind a screen. When you step outside and disconnect from technology it allows you to gain clarity and reflect on everything that is going on in life.

People are constantly busy. Taking the time to just breathe, helps everything to fall into place.

However, there is a bigger idea behind this. It is critical to let yourself reflect on your life and let yourself feel. Many times I have recognized myself getting caught up in the chaos of everything and overlooking my mental well-being completely. Typically, it is totally subconscious, but it is essential to take the time to reflect on your experiences and recognize how they have helped you to grow as an individual.

Even jumping back to last year, you are likely not the person that you were then. I encourage you to take the time to think about how you have changed and what you can do to be a better version of yourself.

I love putting things into perspective by imagining what I would think of who I am now when I was a little girl. Would you look up to the person that you are now and the path that you are on? Or are there things that you would like to change so that you can be that role model to your younger self and to others today.

On another note, having free time can be a blessing, so take advantage of it. I have been using this time to focus on myself and my mental health. It is so important to learn to love yourself before you can establish healthy relationships with others. Your body is your temple, so treat it like one.

Eating healthy is so important too because it makes you feel good, is incredibly beneficial to your health, and will help you a lot down the road. Cheat days are important too, so don’t restrict yourself too much.

Lately, the gym has become one of my best friends. The endorphins from exercising make you feel so good and working out does amazing things for your body. For me personally, it has built up my self confidence and taught me the vitality of prioritizing mental and physical health.

Though this is likely not true to everyone, the gym has become sort of like my therapy. It helps me to clear my head and just take a moment to fully focus on my personal well-being which has proven to be incredibly beneficial for my overall health and stress levels, especially during school.

I have found that my stress going into the gym is always little to none when I leave. Therefore, I almost always leave the gym happy.

That being said, it is very beneficial to highly value your well-being. Establishing a lifestyle where physical and mental health are central to your core values will set you up for success.

Self-love is not selfish. Taking the time to appreciate who you are as a person, will help you to be a better person to others. Be the person that you want to be best friends with, ask yourself, would I want to hangout with myself? Am I the person that I want to be?

The way that you act and are perceived by others is totally in your control and you are entirely responsible for your actions. That being said, don’t hesitate to own up to your mistakes and learn from them. It is better to be completely honest with yourself and others than constantly put up a facade of what you think people want to see. This is honestly easier said than done, but incredibly important, so take note of this.

What is the first step to this self-love journey you may ask? You need to be loyal to yourself. If you say you are going to go to the gym, do it. Don’t let yourself down. Building trust in yourself and your abilities will work wonders on your life and will drastically impact your journey towards finding yourself and reaching total self-actualization.
